Story

When I get most tracks in their album order, I like to reserve two slots for glue/transition tracks – reset things between songs that otherwise would sit oddly together, give some variety, and cleanup tasks like that.

This is the first – a chance to actually slow down the album in line with my goals.  It came together in 4 hours – from hook to basically done – so that’s weird.  Brilliance and laziness are indistinguishable in the trough of brevity, or something.

“Gedenkwald” is a German word meaning “memorial forest.”  I adapted the name from the Neu! song “Gedenkminute (Für A+K),” which is similarly short and transitional.  “Gedenkminute” means “moment of silence.”  Mine would make sense as a reference if I had kept the “minute” bit instead of the solemn memory bit.  But then how would I be mysterious?  Hmm?

This is my wife’s favorite song of mine. It’s also one of my shortest. Connected? That’s a great Stereo MCs song, but no, the two facts are not connected. She just likes creepy soundtrack things.

Some press about it

#Gedenkwald opens in a slightly different way with a bass solo at the front during the opening bars. Moving into the track we hear a door bell synth that is joined with aboriginal sounds. This is an experimental naturistic yet futuristic piece. I like it.” – Tamara Jenna, TJPL News

““Gedenkwald” thoroughly intrigues with its swampy murmuring effect and chiming key resonance, offering up an atmosphere entirely of its own.” – Obscure Sound
